This is an incredibly common problem with the mk2 and mk3 Focus. I’ve had to fix several leaks in both. There are a ton of videos on YouTube that I followed. Just search for water leak in boot/trunk. For me I had multiple leaks in the mk2. Just very poor design from Ford. Unfortunately there’s no quick and easy fix.
For undoing the knob, grip the top of the boot to prevent it from spinning and start unscrewing. It can take a fair bit of effort to get the knob to start turning.
